LIBERTY FOR SOME – NOT FOR ALL – UNEQUAL TREATMENT
Imprisonment or other severe deprivation of physical liberty.
Long Term Care Facility (LTC) residents were deprived of their liberties and physically imprisoned. They were forbidden to have human contact, and have their advocates involved in their care. In MN 82% of our 2020 Covid-19 deaths occurred in LTC.
While seniors were forced to be lockdown in LTC, prisoners had the option to be released in order to avoid contracting Covid-19.
“Throughout the pandemic, the DOC granted 158 inmates conditional medical release because of health issues that put them at risk of contracting COVID-19. Late last month, as first reported in the Reformer, the agency notified 18 of them that they would need to return to prison to serve out the rest of their sentence. DOC asserted it lacked the legal authority to let them remain on release because of the wide availability of COVID-19 vaccines and treatments.”
